Sponsor Spotlight: The Knotty Babe #snugbug

Tomorrow starts the Snug as a Bug Blog Hop.

The Knotty Babe is one of the sponsors for this event.  I was happy to review an organic beanie and leg warmer set.  They fit my hefty 9 month old as well as my teeny three and three quarter year old. I especially loved the leg warmers as I didn't feel like the edges squeezed legs too tight if that makes sense.

You can find The Knotty Babe on both Facebook as well as Etsy  You will love the choices in organic material!  Also, if you have an idea of something that you don't see, custom orders are welcome!

I was also sent a Fred plush toy and Boaz LOVES it!  I love that it matches Boaz's bedding!  It is super soft and snuggly and has a rattle inside!  Super cute and unique baby gift!  That is my favorite kind!  I will definitely be ordering from The Knotty Babe in the future for shower gifts!

Please check back tomorrow to see what you can win from The Knotty Babe! I promise you won't be disappointed!

Disclaimer: I was given these items to review but the opinions are my own.

Prevent Summer "Brain Drain" by Planning Ahead

School is out and children are so excited that summer is here, but it won't be long until you hear the infamous, "I'm bored" from your little ones.

Primrose Schools, the leader in educational child care, recommends encouraging imaginative play and having a plan in place to keep children's minds engaged during the summer months. Studies show that without stimulation, children can lose up to 60 percent of what they learned during the school year.

That's why Dr. Mary Zurn, Vice President of Education for Primrose, has come up with the list of ideas below as a starting point for summer activities that offer a balance between the freedom of child-initiated play time and more structured activities.

Since summer is a great time to encourage children to let their imaginations, here are 11 ideas parents can use to keep young minds active during the summer months:

1. Boredom Buster Jar: At the beginning of the summer, sit down with your family and brainstorm a lit of activities that can be done alone or that you can enjoy doing together. Encourage your children to share their own ideas and help you decorate and label as simple jars as the family "Boredom Buster Jar." They'll feel more involved in the project and more likely to think this is a "neat" idea, if they participate in the creation and idea generation. Next, write everyone's ideas down on slips of paper and as a group decide which ones should go in the jar. Anyone in the family can pull any idea out of the jar to fight the summertime boredom blues.

2. Stories Alive: It sounds too simple, but reading is one of the most important ways to keep young minds engaged during the summer. Make reading even more fun by finding ways to bring the stories to life. For example, in the book, Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, children create a make-believe town in the desert out of rocks, boxes, and their imaginations. Read the book with your children and then challenge them to create their own town with materials they find in the backyard.

3. Art Start Box: You'll need to gather basic art supplies: child-safe scissors, glue, markers, tape and construction paper. Put them in a special box along with empty oatmeal boxes and paper towel rolls, colorful magazines and bits of aluminum foil. Occasionally add a special surprise like chalk, stickers, or stamp pads so there's always something new for the children to find. Even if you normally have these supplies around the house, it's fun for children to know that the Art Start Box is just for them. They'll probably have some good ideas of other household items that can be recycled to fuel their creative energies.

4. Family Performances: Break out old clothes or costumes and encourage children to make up characters and create a play to act out. They are the directors, actors, and producers. They can also make musical instruments out of pots/pans, wooden spoons, empty canisters and have a parade; or everyone can play along to your family's favorite songs. Record or video the performances, and enjoy the replay. You'll also be capturing a bit of family history everyone will enjoy for years to come.

5. Family Dance Party: Crank up the music and encourage your entire family to boogie down. Dancing gives children a great outlet for self-expression through their own motion and helps build self-esteem. It also enhances motor and coordination development by incorporating skills like jumping, landing and leaping. Dancing is a great activity that involve the whole family and doesn't take very much preparation.

6. Fort Building: Children love to build all kinds of structures-from small towns to large towers. Constructing forts or tents is an activity that can keep children focused and problem solving for hours. All the items you need can be found around the house-some chairs, cushions, blankets, and of course adult supervision.

7. Cookbook Fun: Have you ever shared your favorite cookbook with your children? Take it out and ask your children to choose a recipe to try. Measuring can be a fun and easy way to keep math skills fresh.

8. Summer Scrapbook: All you need for this project is a spiral notebook. Encourage everyone in the family to draw pictures of favorite activities and collect mementos from special events throughout the summer. Children love to go back through scrapbooks and albums and tell about what happened at each occasion. They will also be building their storytelling skills at the same time.

9. Listening Game: Lie down in the backyard, in the den or at the park and listen. What do you hear? Do you hear what I hear? Can you imitate the sound? This is similar to watching the clouds and naming the shapes, and it encourages everyone to slow down and focus on listening.

10. Camping Out: Pretend to campout in the backyard. Plan a mean, pack a backpack and set up a campsite. You might even decide to spend the night!

11. Scavenger Hunt: Make a list or picture cards of common household items and have your children find the items on the list. Invite friends or neighbors to join in the fun to make it a competition.

Disclosure: I was entered for a chance to win a gift card in exchange for this post. No monetary exchange took place.

Online Learning

If you have spent any amount of time around me you know that I am a great supporter of online learning! I received my M.S. in Science Education K-8 from Walden University and my E.d.S. Educational Leadership from Liberty University. Both of these degrees were online. I remember when Chris and I first started discussing this option he thought of it almost as a joke. Then when he saw me working feverishly on assignments and I would tell him little bits about it he knew it was serious and we were getting our money's worth!

Because of my love for online learning I was excited to check out this online learning website for students and do a review. Distance learning is becoming more and more popular. I recently wrote an article regarding teaching "screenagers!" I was able to check out the website for KC Distance Learning at www.onlineschoolsolutions.com

Today's students are know as the "iGeneration" and are used to having things "on demand" and crave the ability to at least have the option to choose where, when and how they want to learn.

To put it in context, the "iGeneration" has never know life without the Internet, being mobile, using avatars, IMing or choosing and watching content whether they are at home, in the car, at a football game of shopping at the mall. (Seriously-my 15 month old know how to turn the tv on and off and work my blackberry to call her Daddy) To reach them in their high-tech, high-touch world, many parents and educators are looking at how to require schools to match how the iGeneration learns. (On this note, our middle school just became a Google school! So fun!)

Taking classes online is one way to give middle and high school students (and their school districts) new options to learn using preferred tools in a familiar environment, and even experience enhanced, one-on-one relationships with educators. Whether they're in need of more assistance, looking for wider range of classes or simply prefer to learn in a medium that they have grown up with, online learning can be a great way to fit your child's needs.

Students are increasingly able to take online classes in partnerships with their local school districts. Schools facing budget cuts and reduction in teachers are turning to online classes to supplement their curriculum, from offering classes for which they have no teachers, AP classes for students who excel, and credit recovery options for students who struggle. In fact, today there re 1 million children learning online, either part time, full time or between school terms. Additionally, more that 20 percent of schools and educational institutions around the country offer online classes today, and that number should grow by another 30 percent withing a couple of years, according to industry research. (Simba information).

Do you want to see a demonstration? This video clip will help you see the tools and technologies online students use to engage with their teachers and classmates. Click on the following link to experience how students engage online, in a recorded session where students from around the country come together outside of class to discuss the results of the "iGeneration" survey with their teacher and hear their insights. http://smub.it/jlj.iglive

Also, to experience the robust curriculum offered by online learning, click on the following link-
http://aventalearning.com/aventa-capabilities-demo Once there, select the green button that says "view multi-media demon." When the demo loads, select media-rich curriculum to experience how online learning is effectively teaching today's iGeneration.

Success Stories:
More that 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students who were at risk of not graduating from high school have received their diplomas this month with the rest of the CPS Class of 2010 after earning the credits needed to graduate through and innovative learning program at 75 schools across CPS.

Karl, a child of a military family, moved numerous times throughout his high school years, but wanted a consistent education experience. With online learning, Karl had the chance to excel at his studies and even graduated early with a 4.0 grade average. Karl embraced the independence and self-mastery that online learning fostered.

Isadora, a star tennis player, was struggling with the best way to juggle her demanding tournament schedule with a good education. Her parents enrolled her in online learning as a supplement to her local high school, so she was able to get her two to three hours a day tennis training and stay ahead academically.

If you want to check out KC Distance Learning at www.onlineschoolsolutions.com click on your state to find the KCDL online school serving your area. I focused on the middle school area since this is the level I am most familiar with. The option for total enrollment as well as partial enrollment is available.

As a huge supporter of online learning I loved this site and the options it offers parents and students. Is online learning for everyone? No. Everyone learns differently. I would not rule out this option though as it is becoming more and more commonplace as technology becomes more prevalent in our lives.

eShakti: A Review

I was contacted by eShakti and asked to review their product. What is eShakti? Well, they sell women's clothes sizes 0-26W and here is the really great part...any item can be customized to your body to ensure the best possible fit and feel.

I chose a dress. I love to wear dresses and skirts but have recently come to the conclusion that I don't like anything above my knees. Right below the knee or longer is more flattering as well as less to hassle with in my opinion. Remember I am chasing a little one all of the time.

Here is my choice:

I loved wearing it! You know how normally with most outfits you have to pull and tug things in the right place throughout the day? I didn't have to with this dress! I got compliments on the dress! One from a BFF that liked it, but she is a fashionista and probably happy that I was wearing something new! The other compliment was from a man! A friend, but not my husband. Husband compliments are awesome, but I don't know about you...I think I could wear muddy jeans with holes in the knees and Chris would say I looked beautiful.

The dress was fully lined and of very high quality material! Another thing I liked about the custom measuring? You could choose to change the length of the skirt, the style of the sleeves (like from sleeveless to cap sleeves, etc), and the neckline. I LOVED this option! You will never have to say: "I like this dress but...."

Well, what do you think?

PS-A little birdie told me there might be an eShakti giveaway next month!

Disclosure: I was given the dress to wear and review. My honest opinions are offered here.

got2b Smooth Operator

Has anyone else's hair changed after having a baby? Maybe I am blaming it on that and not on just getting older. My hair is frizzy now. Sometimes when I am teaching and I will see my shadow on the smart board, I will get this urge to stop everything and smooth my hair...thankfully I am able to resist this urge.

But when BzzAgent contacted me about working on a BzzCampaign for got2b Smooth Operator I was excited! Remember how I am not make-up savvy? Well, the same goes for hair. And I can use this product! I was scared it would make my hair greasy but it doesn't!

BzzAgent sent me a coupon to try one of their products for free and I chose the Smoothing Lustre Lotion. You simply rub a small amount in your hair after it is towel dried and then style as normal.

Information from my BzzKit: ...shapes, smooths, controls flyaways, and gives your hair an amazing weightless lustre that touchably soft. Plus it protects against damage from heat styling and contains a UV protectant, too.

The verdict: Yes, it does work! I have noticed a lot less fly-aways! Let me know what you think!

CoverGirl Blast

I received a sample of CoverGirl Blast Smoky Shadow Blast from BzzAgent to try and create buzz about. I really like this product! I am not make-up inclined ( I wear it but not super well) and I can even use this product!

I have the one that was first lined up on the clip, the green! I love it and look forward to trying the different colors!

So, if you are looking to try something new, easy, and fun...check out Covergirl Smoky Shadow Blast! And let me know what you think!

Reviews and Giveaways: Why?

I have been asked how I get connected with people to be able to do reviews and giveaways on products.  I at first was just going to answer privately, but then decided this might be helpful to others as well.

I want to start with why I do reviews and giveaways: 1) They are fun! 2) I usually get free product and a chance to try something new 3) It drives more traffic to my blog 4) It helps advertisers connect new people with their products.  So, it really is a win-win situation.

My first resources is: My Blog Spark.  I have not gotten a lot of offers from them as of yet.  I have gotten the four coupons for free General Mills cereal though.

MomSelect is another great resource!  They provided the Rainbow Brite CD-roms.  They have great twitter parties all of the time!  I received an email from them to try out a great product but it was for newborns and Lorelei was too old.  I heart this resource!

Next I would suggest Twitter.  Seriously, I like Twitter better than Facebook!  Follow your favorite products and companies!  Connect.  Offer your services to do a review and/or giveaway.  Remember it is a win-win situation!  Remember to read other people's tweets!  I found out about a review/giveaway opportunity through someone else's tweets.  (Look for it...it will be coming at the end of this month...you won't want to miss it!...That is all I can let slip out now!)

Think of your friends that have small businesses.  Approach them about doing a giveaway on your blog.  Think: win-win!

I hope this helps!  If you have other resources that you would like to share, I would appreciate it!  Also, leave me comments and let me know if any of these were helpful to you!
